'It is most important to reach the highest level of intensity with the simplest of means. I'm looking for the most intense colour so as to trigger the densest response and attain the strongest dynamic possible. Shape and colour must interact in such a way that both contribute to create a dynamic force.' Fernand Leduc (1916-2014), quoted in Abstract Painting In Canada, 204. More images...

'It’s the birthday of American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, tax resister, and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862).... At Walden Pond near Concord, [he] built a small cabin, and spent two years, two months, and two days listening to whip-poor-wills singing, frogs croaking, and owls hooting.... He always left three chairs ready for visitors. It was a grand experiment: to see if simple self-sufficiency could lead to a greater, more objective understanding of society. It took almost nine years for Thoreau to complete his book on his experience in the woods. He titled the book Walden; or, A Life In The Woods (1854). The book became the foundation for the future movements of ecology and environmentalism'

'My paintings ... are attempts to find visual equivalence to this feeling of tranquility ... [and before] a sympathetic viewer perhaps even to induce peace and order. It is in this regard that I feel they are within the tradition of iconographic art, except unlike icons of the past, there is no need to identify with a specific religion or religious symbols. The painting then becomes a focus for contemplation'. Brian Fisher (1939-2012), quoted in Abstract Painting In Canada, 226.

Kenneth Noland (1924-2010):
'Instead of painting the canvas with a brush, Noland’s style was to stain the canvas with colour. This idea sought to remove the artist through brushstrokes. This made the piece about the art, not the artist.... Noland used simplified abstraction so the design would not detract from the use of colour.'

The word-of-the-day, 'arable', means 'suitable for farming', as in 'A diet based on plants uses a sixth the arable land as a diet based on meat, poultry, and dairy.' (David Macfarlane; Are Vegans Right?; The United Church Observer, Canada, May 2016.)

'On this day in 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m., the first atom bomb was successfully detonated at White Sands Proving Ground in Alamogordo, New Mexico.... Ken Bainbridge, the Harvard physicist in charge of the whole enterprise, known as the Manhattan Project, turned to J. Robert Oppenheimer and said, “We are all sons of bitches now.” On August 6th and August 9th, the United States bombed the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.... Bainbridge dedicated his life to the eradication of nuclear weaponry.' Within a few years the Soviets started testing on Novaya Zemlya (see 'Music', above).

'I'm interested in taking a nothing colour [said David Bolduc, 1945-2010] and giving it some bite to make it warmer. I'm not trying to be inovative. I'm trying to make an object you haven't seen before. Colour is all I'm working with.' Abstract Painting In Canada, 253.
