christmas

Christmas in Germanyas christmas approaches, the group home is busy. last night we hosted a potluck attended by the other group homes. the previous night we piled into the van and went to the local mall. we ate at the food court at the mall. i had a salad with light mayo dressing. as for shopping, i refused to buy anything from another country that we could easily make in canada, so ixnay on the pine-scented candles from bangladesh. also 'no' to wal-mart. so this year's christmas theme seems to be how to be unpopular.

  1. Good call trusting your gift filter.
There's plenty of things we can buy right here in Canada, and retailers need a message: Canadian made goods ARE of value to consumers.

Too bad they're so hard to find...

  2. true. and some of it--such as the music scene, as you know--is unique. but even for products made or harvested around the world, we need to consider the hidden or externalised costs of getting that good or service to market. specifically, how much fossil fuel was used in the item's mining, manufacturing, and distribution?

in a global economy on a finite planet there is no such thing as 'external.'
