couples, religion, and happiness

i've known them for 20 years--he's an atheist, and she's a lapsed catholic-buddhist-sorta-thing--they're the happiest couple i know. another i know are god-centred and don't look as happy--so is religion such a big deal? or is it really personality that makes the person, and not so much the belief?
