"Simply put, there is a need for whoever becomes elected to drive forward based on vision," says McKay, pointing out that absent vision could cause current waste reduction gains to be reversed and the public to be confused about what should be done with waste. "The 2011 provincial election campaign will debate the existing waste system and practice in Ontario. Both the rhetoric and the outcome of this debate will affect the future of waste management in our province."
But can Ontario see the goal for the garbage?
That's the question Zero Waste Simcoe, a local grassroots organization, asks.
Zero Waste Simcoe research finds that Ontario's systemic waste disposal problem has been around for decades. Waste is built in to how Ontarians produce and how they consume. It forms a significant part of the provincial economy. Correcting this will require a structured approach. It will not be addressed with one-off fixes.
McKay feels that "seeing our future is critical to guiding the waste choices we must make today... achieving Zero Waste targets, which is happening in so many jurisdictions and businesses, does not happen overnight.."
To this end, Zero Waste Simcoe hopes the parties contending to lead Ontario will have the vision to craft a real plan and tell the public how they intend to address the structural waste issues facing the province.'
