barney's version

saw barney's version last night with sue as part of the huronia museum film series. based on the novel by mordecai richler and set in montreal, barney's version won Paul Giamatti (barney) a golden globe. nominated for London Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress was Rosamund Pike (miriam) and nominated for Best Supporting Actress was Minnie Driver. Dustin Hoffman (izzy) as barney's father led a stellar cast--which included his real-life son jake playing barney's son michael--all of whom should have received awards. however, it was shunned at the oscars. there were canadian cameos: Saul Rubinek (Charnofsky, Barney's first father in-law), Atom Egoyan (early director of Barney's soap opera Constable O'Malley of the North), David Cronenberg (later director of Barney's soap), Paul Gross (star in Barney's soap), and Denys Arcand (maƮtre'd at Barney and Miriam's last luncheon). we wondered how barney's friend boogie's dead body could go undetected for thirty years and then be found on a mountaintop when he ostensibly drowned in the lake at the foot of barney's dock (or did barney shoot him?), but then we thought, waterbombers.
