'For those hoping to head a country .... to ignore or outright deny the problem is a punch in the face to humanity. Let’s hope that, whatever the outcome on November 8, the U.S. government will heed its experts ... and get serious about climate and the measures needed to ensure citizens’ well-being and survival.' By David Suzuki with contributions from Ian Hanington.

'People, polar bears, narwhals, belugas, bowheads, walrus, seals and seabirds all make their home in Lancaster Sound in Canada’s Eastern Arctic. For more than 30 years, communities have been working to protect the region from industrial development and it’s time to make this dream a reality. In 2015, Canada’s new government committed to protecting 5 per cent of Canada’s marine and coastal areas by 2017. Join us in thanking the government for this commitment and urging our national leaders to make Lancaster Sound one of our top priorities by designating it as a National Marine Conservation Area.'--WWF-Canada

David Miller, President and CEO, WWF-Canada and former mayor of Toronto, agrees with David Suzuki and many others: 'We are consuming more than nature can deliver. And wildlife is paying the price.... Clearly, something has to give.... The growth of GDP as our main policy goal won’t work in the long term because GDP fails to measure the cost of environmental destruction.... We know we can live--and prosper--within nature’s limits. To get there, we need a more sophisticated equation. Carbon pricing is a significant first step.... We have put together this list of 15 steps Canada can take now to protect biodiversity. For all wildlife, including us. Before it’s too late.'

'At the moment, Canada only protects about one per cent of its oceans and Great Lakes, though it has committed to increasing that to 10 per cent by 2020. Expanding the area protected, and including meaningful minimum standards that would prevent oil and gas exploration and significant commercial fishing, could make a great difference to species and habitats, and possibly even reverse some of the biodiversity declines we’ve seen in our oceans.'
