'To Live in Reality'

'The first principle in accompaniment is to help the other person to live in reality and not in dreams, theories and illusions, to accept who he or she really is, with their inner handicaps, wounds and shadow areas, so that they do not live in a constant state of frustration, guilt and stress. There is no need to be perfect. Of course, we need hope, and a vision for the future, but these are very different from illusions and dreams that have no basis in reality, that are the fruit of an imagination, cut off from reality.'

- Jean Vanier, Our Journey Home, p. 157
